Award-winning Companies to Open their Facilities for ISPE Innovation Event in Germany

ISPE is hosting a pioneering European event to showcase award-winning pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities at its Facility of the Year Innovation Showcase 2009 being held 2-3 November in Ulm, Germany. Representatives and suppliers of Boehringer Ingelheim, Centocor, F. Hoffman-La Roche, hameln pharma, IDT Biologika, Pfizer, Vetter Pharmaceuticals will be available to discuss their innovative facilities.

2009 Facility of the Year Award Winners Announced

Six pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities constructed by companies located in Belgium, India, Ireland, Germany, and Switzerland have been selected as Category Winners in the fifth annual Facility of the Year Awards program sponsored by ISPE, INTERPHEX, and Pharmaceutical Processing magazine. The companies and respective award categories include:

  • Aseptic Technologies, located in Gembloux, Belgium, winner of the Facility of the Year Award for Equipment Innovation
  • Centocor Biologics Ireland, located in Ringaskiddy, Cork, Ireland, winner of the Facility of the Year Award for Sustainability
  • Centocor R&D Schaffhausen, located in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, winner of the Facility of the Year Award for Facility Integration
  • Hameln Pharma, located in Hameln, Germany, winner of the Facility of the Year Award for Operational Excellence
  • Orchid Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals, located in Aurangabad, India, winner of the Facility of the Year Award for Regional Excellence
  • Roche Pharma Biotech Production Basel, located in Basel, Switzerland, winner of the Facility of the Year Award for Project Execution

In addition, GlaxoSmithKline Manufacturing was awarded an Honorable Mention for the company’s project in Verona, Italy.

Something Special about Germany

Much to their surprise, Pfizer’s NEWCON facility in Illertissen, Germany was named the Overall Winner of the 2008 Facility of the Year Award. The well-guarded secret was revealed during the ISPE AM08 Keynote.

“It was really a great pleasure and an honor to be named a Category Winner, and so this is even more of a pleasure,” said Peter Reminger, Site Leader and Manager, Pfizer Illertissen. “I’m looking forward to going back to our team in Germany with this great news. At NEWCON, the concept is to push a button once, the process is completely automated, and we have OSD at the end. For us, this is the pharmaceutical manufacturing of the future.”

Pfizer was chosen from a pool of five Category Winners, including Boehringer Ingelheim in Biberach, Germany, Bristol-Myers Squibb in New Brunswick, NJ, USA, IDT Biologika GmbH in Dessau-Rosslau, Germany, and F. Hoffman La Roche AG in Penzberg, Germany.

“There must be something very special about Germany,” joked Clive Mullins, Chairman of the FOYA Committee. “Maybe it’s the beer.”
